Overview

ArcGIS Online is an online, collaborative web GIS that allows you to use, create, and share maps, scenes, apps, layers, analytics, and data. You get access to Living Atlas of the World, apps, and Esri’s secure cloud, where you can add items and publish web layers. Because ArcGIS Online is an integral part of the ArcGIS system, you can use it to extend the capabilities of ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Web APIs, and ArcGIS Runtime SDKs. Read More >>

Process

Rationale for use of ArcGIS Online

  • Encourage the sharing of common apps, maps, and base layers across the organization
  • Building institutional knowledge - as staff move from one operation to another
  • New group(s) could be established for each operation ‘by invite only’ for those assigned to that task, without the need to establish a whole new organizational account
  • Ease of administration OCHA
  • Performing analysis, power web maps, and applications – while using the many apps/templates here like Esri Maps for Office and the Story Maps. 
  • Easy creation of an Open Data site with ArcGIS Online (see how here) which would enable download of the data in CSV, KML, Shapefile, and provide access to the API for GeoJSON and GeoServices, as noted here.  This would enable integration with HDX too

Case study

"with ArcGIS online CODs can be published quickly and general overview/reference made available on the fly displaying P-Codes"
Once COD's quality is high many different products and services can be created. A successful example of this is with the Syria Humanitarian Atlas produced by OCHA Regional Office for the Syria Crisis.
